I read this someplace else before but it was cut off after the hospital bed was shown. I now finally found the ending. This is a very good read.

Apparently, the little girl died as a result of the surgery. There are details that all indicate that she did not survive like the man burning of incense to honor the dead, the girl's uniform(s?) being wrong and other stuff like that. It appears that the story is actually the man being overwhelmed with grief, going through recordings of his memories with her after her demise. Kind of a downer.
